Marcelo Jabulas | @mjabulas – Hideo Kojima is an eccentric man. Whether it is for his fascination with David Bowie or for the surrealism of Metal Gear, it is clear that Kojima never gives in to the trivial. Last year, the Japanese designer released Death Stranding, a game that puts the player in the shoes of an apocalypse steed, previously exclusive to the PS4.
Contradictory, the game has aroused strong criticism, both positive and negative. We have now had the opportunity to check out the PC Edition (courtesy of Hype Games), which has just made its market debut. It is possible to extract the maximum of visual refinement. But beware, not every computer will support the game.
In terms of gameplay, the game is basically the same. What changes is the graphic refinement. If on PS4 the game was already beautiful, now it’s spectacular. In the PC edition, it is possible to operate in 4K resolution with a frame rate of 60 fps (frame exchange per second). It’s a remarkable thing, but it requires advanced hardware like a good high-frequency monitor.
The production allows for Ultrawide (21: 9) framing, for this gaming monitor of the moment. Next to it you also need a small Chernobyl power station in the cabinet. High performance processor like Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 6 GB RAM graphics card and 80 GB storage (SSD recommended).
But it is still possible to have fun with a more modest machine with a processor matched to the Core i5 and a dedicated 3 GB video card. RAM and storage are the same.
In Death Stranding, the player plays Sam Porter Bridges, a character who takes on the features and voices of actor Norman Reedus (Daryl, from The Walking Dead). Sam is a delivery boy in a world ravaged by invisible creatures that consume corpses and produce rain that spoils people.
Thus, what remains of humanity is isolated in the colonies and it is up to the couriers to transport the objects to connect the communities. The problem is, there is no shortage of bandits and the prominent presence of these invisible creatures.
To deal with the problem, Sam wears an artificial uterus in his jumpsuit. It contains a baby capable of detecting the presence of these creatures.
In other words, an unusual game that is the face of Kojima, with its eccentricities like the tracheotomy to insert headphones in the subjects of Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain.
One of the factors that has drawn criticism is the fact that the player often spends long periods of time going through the storyline without any moment of action. It’s really boring to walk around with nothing happening, like sitting for hours in front of Flight Simulator on a transatlantic route.
But you have to try to understand that the game takes place in a devastated world. Even with the bandits and the mysterious creature. Life was essentially over. It wouldn’t make sense for densely populated paths.
The game also includes new side missions, available at the highest difficulty level. One of them merges with the classic Half-Life. The 1998 game lends plot elements to the production. These are extras that stir the imagination of fans of the series, who still dream of Half-Life 3.
The arrival of Death Stranding on PC expands the player network. It’s a beautiful looking game, with gameplay and storylines that escape the “rice and beans” industry. But it should be clarified that this is a game to run on a PC with good performance, because below the recommended specs it is not worth trying.
